What Should I Wear to a Wedding This Season

Four invitations on the fridge, a summer of Saturdays booked, and, if you are anything like the rest of us, one honest question: what on earth do I wear to all of them? Here is how to dress for every wedding this season, from a quiet register office to a black-tie marquee, without spending a fortune or accidentally upstaging the bride.

The invitations have landed, the diary is full, and somewhere between June and September you have four weddings and nothing to wear. Here is how to dress for every one of them; from a Tuesday register office to a black-tie marquee, without upstaging the bride or spending a fortune.

A wedding guest in a butter-yellow midi dress standing in a sunlit garden marquee.

Wedding season has a way of arriving all at once. August is the busiest month for ceremonies in the UK, with June and July close behind, so many of us are dressing for back-to-back celebrations on a single wardrobe and a real budget. The good news is that this season is unusually kind to a guest: fluid fabrics, soft tailoring and pastels are everywhere, and almost none of it asks you to be uncomfortable. But before you buy or borrow a thing, do one small thing first; read the invitation properly.

Early this year, one of my cousins got married in Portugal. I ordered more than 12 outfits online and I made a several visits to the malls before I could get a suitable outfit to wear for the occasion. It was a dilema, to say the least. Imagiine if I had to do this for four (4) weddings in a row.

i. Read the dress code first

The most useful words on any invitation are the ones most of us skim straight past: the dress code. "Lounge suit" is not black tie. "Cocktail" is not "wear whatever you like." Decode that single line and you have made half the decision already. What follows is arranged the way real invitations tend to escalate, from the quietest ceremony to the grandest evening.

Get the code right and the outfit very nearly chooses itself.

ii. The register office: polished, not fussy

For a weekday ceremony or an intimate town-hall wedding, think smart rather than formal. This is soft tailoring's moment: wide-leg trousers in ivory, stone or taupe with a silk or satin blouse, and a low kitten heel. It reads expensive, it stays cool, and if you prefer a little more coverage, it is one of the most elegant modest looks going this year. A single soft neutral, top to toe, does the same job with even less effort.

Our editors choose every piece on merit. Some links earn What To Wear Post a small commission at no extra cost to you — it keeps the newspaper independent.

iii. The garden or marquee: this season's playground

Outdoor summer weddings are where the trends actually live. Reach for a macro floral, the big, zoomed-in prints that have replaced the ditsy ones; or a polka-dot midi in a fabric that moves. Butter yellow is still the colour of the season, with baby blue and soft pink close behind. Choose a block heel or a smart flat, because grass and stilettos have never once been friends.

For an older and traditional person, M&S is my pick. But if you are young and vibrant and you want that to reflect your look, Mango, Nobody's Child and ASOS will be the ideal place to pick up your wedding guest's outfit for this wedding season

A full-length garden look: bold floral or polka-dot midi, block heels.

iv. The church or cathedral:  considered and covered

A traditional ceremony rewards a little more formality and a little more coverage. A wrap midi or maxi, an off-shoulder neckline softened with a fine knit, or pleated separates all strike the right note. Keep a light jacket or shawl to hand, English churches stay cool even in a heatwave, which is a mercy for the outfit and for you.

v. Cocktail, the sweet spot

Cocktail is the most common code and the most forgiving. A knee-to-midi dress in a jewel tone or a painterly print, one considered accessory, and a heel you can genuinely stand in for six hours. For the season's playful edge, a little fringe or a ruffle carries you neatly from the ceremony to the dance floor.

vi. Black tie, the full stop

For a black-tie or formal evening wedding, go long: a floor-length gown, a well-cut jumpsuit, or a satin slip under good jewellery. This is the one occasion to let the outfit be the loudest thing you say — short of the bride. Always short of the bride.

Embellished linen dress — Johanna Ortiz, £2,105

Sac A Main Small studded clutch — Rabanne, £640.00

vii. The rules that never change

Whatever the code, a few things hold every single time. Never wear white, off-white, or anything that could photograph as ivory; that column belongs to one person. Try not to turn up in the bridesmaids' colour. Dress for the venue and the weather as much as the dress code: a marquee in a heatwave and a stone church in April are simply different assignments. And choose shoes you can dance in, because you will.

One more thing worth knowing this season: renting is no longer a compromise. With back-to-back weddings and a no-repeat culture online, hiring a designer piece for a single day is often the smartest,  and cheapest way to look like you spent a fortune. The luxury look for less, quite literally.

If you have a wedding to attend this season, are you aware of the dress code? If yes, which of the looks are you most likely to emulate? And are you buying or renting? Leave your comments below. Perhaps you have advice for others to follow? Let us know in the comment too

Get the code right, dress for the day you are actually attending, and leave the white to the bride. That is the whole of it.

The Online Fashion Newspaper Is Live — Edition No. 1

Edition No. 1  ✦  From the Editor

What To Wear Post is now publishing as an online fashion newspaper. Here is what that means, what you can expect from it, and why it exists at all.

There is a question almost everyone asks, quietly, most mornings of their lives. It gets asked in front of a wardrobe with the door open. It gets asked again three weeks before a wedding, the night before an interview, and roughly an hour before a first date.

What should I wear?

It sounds like a small question. It isn't. Getting dressed is one of the few decisions you make every single day, in public, with consequences you can feel in the room. Turn up in the wrong thing and you spend the evening managing it rather than enjoying it. Turn up in the right thing and you forget about your clothes entirely — which is, in the end, the whole point.

Most fashion coverage doesn't actually answer that question. It shows you a runway you cannot buy, or a trend list that will be irrelevant by November, or a £900 coat presented as a sensible basic. It is inspiring, occasionally. It is rarely useful on a Tuesday.

What To Wear Post is built the other way round. It starts with the occasion, the invitation, the dress code you have been handed — and works backwards to a real outfit, at a real price, that you can actually get hold of this week.

Fashion is more than clothing. It is communication, confidence, identity and self-expression.

What you can expect

Six recurring columns, running on rotation. They are designed to be looked up as much as read.

What Should I Wear To…?  —  The signature column. One occasion, answered completely: the dress code, the outfit, the shoes, the thing everyone gets wrong.

The Luxury Look for Less  —  A designer look, rebuilt on a real budget and styled identically. Same silhouette, a fraction of the price.

Runway to Reality  —  The season's biggest trends, translated into clothes you would genuinely leave the house in.

Register Office to Black Tie  —  The full formality scale, decoded. Because “lounge suit” on an invitation should not require a search engine.

Dressed Right  —  Short, practical styling rules. The kind of thing you read once and use for years.

The Weekly Edit  —  Friday’s newsletter. The week’s guides in one email, with nothing padded out to fill space.

The promise

Every recommendation here is chosen because it works, not because it pays. Where a link earns a commission, that is disclosed plainly and it costs you nothing. Prices and stock are checked before publication, and the high street is treated with exactly as much seriousness as the runway.

You will not be told that a £400 blazer is a wardrobe essential. You will be told which £40 one holds its shape, and what to look for on the label.

Starting this week

Wedding season, properly handled. Tomorrow: five guest looks, from register office to black tie, one for every level of formality. On Wednesday: the wedding guest dress-code decoder, which translates every phrase you are likely to find on an invitation into an outfit you can actually put together.

The Weekly Edit

One email, every Friday. The week’s guides, edited down.

No spam, no filler — just what to wear, and where to find it.

One last thing. This newspaper works best as a conversation. If there is an occasion you are dreading, a dress code you cannot decipher, or a designer piece you want found for less — say so in the comments. Those questions become the guides.

Welcome to What To Wear Post. Dressed right, every single time.

Plaid Trend 2025: 5 Key Fashion Aspects & Styling Tips

5 Key Aspects of the 2025 Plaid Trend and How to Style It

Plaid But Make It HOT 🔥

Plaid is back in full swing for 2025, and it’s not just your cozy winter print anymore—it’s a high-fashion powerhouse redefining wardrobes across all seasons.

From bold checks to subtle tartans, designers are refreshing plaid with modern twists that feel both nostalgic and forward-looking.

If you’re ready to embrace this timeless yet trending pattern, here are five key aspects of the 2025 plaid trend—plus styling tips to nail the look.

📌 Versatile Styling:
Plaid can be styled for a sophisticated, polished look, or for a more laid-back, effortless vibe.

1. Maximalist Colour Palettes

This year, plaid isn’t playing it safe with neutrals. Instead, designers are rolling out bold, clashing colors like electric blues, fiery reds, neon greens, and sunny yellows. Think punk-rock meets digital futurism.

How to style it: Balance your statement plaid piece with neutral basics.

For example, pair a neon plaid skirt with a simple white tee and sleek ankle boots. If you’re feeling daring, try mixing two plaid colourways for a runway-ready vibe.

2. Oversized Silhouettes

2025 is the year of comfort and drama, and oversized plaid jackets, blazers, and wide-leg trousers are leading the charge. These larger-than-life silhouettes give off an effortlessly chic, borrowed-from-the-runway appeal.

oversized plaid coat and wide-leg trousers

How to style it: Cinch your oversized plaid blazer with a belt to highlight your waistline, or let it hang loose for that relaxed, off-duty model look.
Add sleek sneakers or chunky boots for a streetwear twist.

3. Plaid Layering Mastery

Layering plaid on plaid is no longer a faux pas—it’s fashion gospel. From check-on-check suits to mismatched plaid scarves thrown over plaid coats, this trend thrives on texture and dimension.

How to style it: Start small with complementary plaids in the same colour family, like a navy plaid skirt with a grey plaid blazer

Feeling adventurous? Go bold with clashing plaids in different sizes—micro-checks against oversized tartans.

Sheer & Lightweight Plaids

How to style it: Pair a sheer plaid blouse with a bralette or sleek tank for a playful edge.

For the evening, pair a sheer plaid maxi dress with strappy heels and statement earrings.

If you prefer the elegant and reserved way, the Saint Laurent plaid silk blouse will not disappoint. Pair with the Gucci interlocking G clip-on earrings, and complete it with the Gucci Jackie 1961 shoulder bag.

This Fall, expect to see a range of colours from earthy tones to bold brights.

  • Earthy tones: Browns, greens, and rusts create a warm and cozy feel.
  • Jewel tones: Emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red add a touch of luxury.
  • Pastels: Soft pinks, blues, and purples offer a feminine touch.

Colour Blocking: A mix of the above palettes
